Copenhagen
So this was my first destination in 2016 and what a place to start. My friend suggested Copenhagen after watching The Danish Girl and I was happy to go with the flow, it was somewhere I hadn't even thought of before.
We met at the pub one evening and over a glass of Pinot or two, scoured the BA website for deals. We decided on 4 nights and chose the boutique Hotel Skt Annae, located near the Nyhavn or 'New Harbour'.
Our flight was booked for 7am, so we set off for London Heathrow around 4am, making sure there was plenty of time for breakfast and a browse. I was very excited having never been to Heathrow before and Terminal 5 did not disappoint.
With no delays we boarded our flight and in just under two hours we landed into Copenhagen. A useful bit of advice- the Copenhagen Card is worth every penny, it included all of our transport for our trip and entry into so many attractions. We activated ours at the airport and boarded the train into the city centre. It was one of the easiest airport journeys, so simple and efficient. One of the things you will notice about Copenhagen is the efficiency, everything runs smoothly and it is pristine in comparison to many other cities.
We dropped our bags off at the hotel and decided to take a walk around to find our bearings. We visited the Amalienborg Palace and saw the changing of the guard, we walked to the most famous Statue in Copenhagen- The Little Mermaid. After an afternoon of exploring we went back to the hotel to check in and to get changed for dinner. The hotel was beautiful, really stylishly done and the staff were so friendly. We were pre-warned that food and drink is expensive in Copenhagen, but we had a budget and we were determined to stick to it! We woke early the next morning and took advantage of having a very impressive breakfast included with the hotel. With full stomachs we set off for a full day of exploring. Making the use of our Copenhagen cards we took a canal tour that passes some of the points of interest including Christianshavn, Amalienborg Palace and The Little Mermaid. The rain was pouring by the time we finished the tour, so we decided to browse some of the designer shops and have a coffee. We discovered we were very close to The Round Tower, the oldest observatory in Europe, so we decided to to take the walk to the top and enjoy the spectacular views over the city.
With so much to see still we hopped on a train and made our way to Copenhagen Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in Europe and one of the only with polar bears. I was very excited to see them up close, but to be honest, they looked incredibly sad, pacing up and down. It wasn't the experience I was hoping for, and I haven't been to a zoo since.
After another lovely dinner and glass of wine in the city, we made our way back through Nyhavn to the hotel. Another early start and busy day followed! We used the public transport once again to take us to Tivoli Gardens- the amusement park opened in 1843, but don't let that put you off! The morning flew past with so many attractions and rides to experience it's the last thing you'd expect to find in the middle of a capital city.
The Royal Stables at Christiansborg Palace were next on our itinerary. As a huge horse-lover I was very excited about this! There is a small museum with interesting artefacts including the royal carriages and harnesses from centuries ago. Today there are around 2o horses residing in the palace stables, all with similar dapple-grey colourings. On our walk back to the hotel we made a pit-stop at Nyhavn and decided we just had to sample some of the churros so many people were eating along the harbour. Definitely worth the money and the calories!
We spent our last day visiting the House of Amber, wandering and exploring, going into all the old churches and popping into the shops, people watching over coffee and lunch before heading back to Copenhagen airport. Copenhagen presents such a variety of cultural experiences, from theme parks and zoos to museums and palaces. The only thing I could have asked for is more time to explore all that this fantastic city has to offer.
